Der Service Civil International (SCI) ist eine der ältesten Friedens- und Freiwilligenorganisationen (NGO/NPO) weltweit, mit 100 Jahren an Erfahrung in der Koordinationen von Freiwilligenprojekten sowie Austauschprogrammen.

SCI Austria ist der österreichische Zweig des Service Civil International und wurde 1947 gegründet. Der SCI Austria wird fast ausschließlich ehrenamtlich geführt. Der Großteil der aktiven MitgliederInnen besteht aus StudentInnen, welche die Büroarbeit, die Koordination der Freiwilligenprojekte, das Versenden und Vorbereiten der Freiwilligen, die Organisation von Veranstaltungen und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit sowie die internationalen Kooperationen leiten. Der Service Civil International (SCI) definiert sich als Friedensorganisation und ist weltweit eine der ältesten und größten Organisationen im Bereich der Freiwilligenarbeit. Der SCI versteht sich als non-govermental (NGO) und non-profit (NPO) Organisation und ist weder politisch noch konfessionell gebunden.

Heute besteht unser Netzwerk aus 44 Zweigen und vielen Partnerorganisationen Weltweit.

Desired volunteer profile

We welcome volunteers who are open, curious and interested in intercultural exchange. Participants should enjoy teamwork, sharing daily tasks and engaging with the local community. Flexibility, communication and a positive attitude are essential. No specific skills are required, but motivation and willingness to participate are important.

Description of the activity

The dry grasslands of the so-called “Weinviertler Klippenzone” in the European Green Belt along the border between Austria and Czech Republic are habitat of a lot of different rare plants and animal species. To maintain these habitats and to avoid invasion of bushes into the grasslands it is necessary to establish regular management. Biotope maintenance like mowing or removing bushes or neophytes will be implemented on rupicolous or steppic grasslands in protected areas - situated amidst a beautiful wine-growing landscape. This helps to preserve rare species like the critically endangered Feather Grass (Stipa tirsa) or the butterfly Mountain Alcon Blue (Phengaris rebeli).

Study theme
The participants will learn about plants and animals and about ecological problems in the area. Some ecological initiatives and protected areas along the Green Belt will be presented and possibilities of management of protected areas will be discussed. We will hear something about wine-production, visit an old castle-ruin and visit the former Iron Curtain.

Work description
International and local volunteers will help mowing steep meadows and remove bushes from dry rocky grasslands that are threatened to be overgrown by bushes and trees. So they will contribute actively to preserve endangered species. Work will be physical (mowing, raking, cutting bushes) and will last for about 5 - 6 hours every day.
