Exchange & Science

Immerse yourself in science for a day? - That is possible! Pupils in grades 6-9 (HarmoS 8-11) from German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland meet for a day at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).

Mathematics, information technology, natural sciences and technology (MINT) are among the most innovative fields in the sciences today. The societal change towards a technological knowledge society has not least contributed to the fact that more and more STEM knowledge is required of young people. "Exchange & Science" is intended to give pupils the opportunity to gain an exciting insight into this field of science. Competences in several foreign languages are considered key competences in today's networked, multicultural and mobile society. Increasingly, people work, learn and live in mixed-language teams in the world of life and work.

Exchange dates/place

Language exchanges can take place throughout the school year depending on availability. Each visit is for two classes only (one French-speaking and one German-speaking class).

Programme

On the science day at EPFL, different workshops are offered for the different school levels.

Two workshops will be offered by the Science Promotion Department of the EPFL for the pupils of the 6th primary class and the 8th HarmoS respectively. Upper school classes (7th-9th grade or 9th-11th HarmoS) can choose between two of three workshops. The two chosen workshops are conducted in bilingual half classes. After a short break, the half classes do the second workshop. In the afternoon, after the picnic, the participants can discover the EPFL campus in the form of a rally.
